Bright Spring
Bright Spring is the clearest of the warm seasons. Its colors are highly saturated and land in the light-to-medium range of depth, with a yellow bias that never tips into earthiness. The contrast that suits this coloring comes from purity of color, not from darkness.
Also called Clear Spring. Bright Spring and Clear Spring are two names for the same type, not two types. Different schools label it differently; the palette, the axes and the styling advice on this page are the same either way. We use “Bright Spring” throughout and keep one page for both names rather than splitting the type in two.
Where it sits on the three axes
Every season on this site is a point on three axes: hue (warm or cool), value (light or deep) and chroma (clear or muted). Those are the three dimensions of the Munsell system, and they are also the three scores the questionnaire produces — so a result can always be traced back to which axis moved and why.

Why someone gets read as Bright Spring
These are the observations that push a result toward this type, grouped by the axis each one moves. If most of them do not describe you, look at the two types under “Easy to confuse with” below before you commit to this palette.
- HueSkin, hair and eyes carry a golden or amber cast in daylight, and the hair usually shows honey, caramel or copper lights where the sun hits it.
- HueCoral, peach and warm turquoise lift the face; the same garment shape in blue-red, icy pink or ash gray leaves the skin looking flat and slightly gray.
- HueWarm ivory sits comfortably against the skin while optic white creates a hard, bluish edge under the jaw and makes the face read as tired.
- ValueNatural hair depth stops somewhere between dark blonde and medium brown, so nothing on the head is genuinely dark next to the skin.
- ValueBlack and charcoal are heavier than anything in the face, so in a photograph the garment holds the eye and the face falls back behind it.
- ChromaThe eyes read as clear and marked, with a visible boundary between iris and white and often a defined ring around the outside of the iris.
- ChromaDusty, grayed or chalky versions of a color make the face look tired, while the saturated version of that same hue does not — the hue was never the problem.

Not forbidden — just off-axis. Each one below misses on a specific axis, which is the part worth knowing.
- Pure Black#000000At L* 0 it is deeper than every color in the palette, whose darkest neutral sits near L* 22. The jump reads as a hole in the outfit and pulls attention off the face.
- Dusty Mauve#9B8592Chroma of about 11 against a core palette averaging 64, and a cool hue on top of it. Two axes wrong at once, which is why it gray-casts the skin rather than just looking dull.
- Cool Burgundy#6E1F3AA blue-based deep red: it pulls the hue axis cold and the value axis deep at the same time, so it fights both the warmth and the light-to-medium depth of this type.
- Stone Gray#8C8C86Near-zero chroma. A palette whose whole identity is saturation has nothing to hold onto next to it, and the color drains out of the face rather than the garment.
How to use it
- Clothing colors
- Buy color at full strength and put it where it touches the face. A poppy-coral knit, a clear apple-green shirt, a warm-turquoise dress or a watermelon-pink blouse each do more for this coloring than any neutral will. Depth is the thing to watch: the palette tops out at a medium-dark clear navy, so a statement piece works by being saturated rather than by being dark. Prints should be clean-edged and high-contrast — two or three core colors against warm ivory, rather than a tonal watercolor wash where every color has been grayed by the same amount. Fabrics with slight sheen (silk, mercerized cotton, crisp poplin, satin-faced twill) hold saturation; heavy matte wool and slub linen visibly gray the same dyed color. If you only buy one thing, make it a top in a core color rather than a coat in a neutral — the coat comes off indoors and the top does not.
- Neutrals
- This palette runs on warm, light-to-medium neutrals: warm ivory, light warm gray, camel and golden tan by day, clear navy and cocoa brown when something has to read as formal. Warm ivory replaces white outright — buy shirts, tees and knitwear in ivory or cream and keep optic white for bed linen. Camel and golden tan replace the gray-beige that most mass-market basics are dyed in. For denim, choose a mid-blue with a clean bright cast rather than raw indigo, black wash or gray wash. Tailoring and coats work in clear navy or camel, not charcoal. Shoes and bags in cognac or tan; when you want something darker, cocoa brown and clear navy both do the job that black is usually bought for, without dropping below the palette's floor.
- Makeup
- Base products should have a golden or peach cast rather than a pink or olive one; the giveaway is that a correctly warm foundation disappears at the jaw while a neutral-cool one leaves a faint gray line. Blush in coral, warm peach or clear warm rose — a blush that looks alarming in the pan is usually right on this face, because the skin absorbs saturation instead of fighting it. Lips in coral, watermelon, clear warm red or bright warm pink, sheer or full; the ones that fail have brown or mauve mixed in, which drops chroma below the palette floor. Eyes in warm bronze, apple green, teal and clear golden brown, with liner in bronze, warm brown or teal rather than flat black. Keep the brow at its natural depth or one step warmer — a pencil that is too dark or too ash reads as drawn on, because nothing else on the face is that deep. Skip taupe, mauve, grayed plum and cool matte contour.
- Hair color
- Stay inside the light-to-medium warm band: honey, golden and caramel through to a warm mid-brown, with copper and strawberry at the warm end. Highlights read best at two or three levels lighter than base, so the head keeps one value rather than splitting into stripes. Three things break it. Ash and cool-beige toners move the hue axis to cool and flatten the whole face. Going darker than a medium brown puts the deepest value in the room on your head, which is the one place this coloring cannot carry it. And heavy gray coverage in a cool base turns the hairline hard. High-lift blonde is fine provided the toner is gold or beige-gold rather than violet or ash, and root shadow should stop at a mid warm brown.
- Accessories and metals
- Yellow gold and rose gold are the defaults; silver is workable but is the compromise, and if you wear it, buy it high-polish rather than brushed so it reads as light rather than gray. Stones that sit inside the palette: turquoise, coral, carnelian, citrine, amber, peridot and warm-toned freshwater pearl. Bags and shoes in cognac, tan, warm ivory and clear navy carry more outfits than black does here. Scarves are the cheapest way to get a core color next to the face — one in warm turquoise and one in poppy coral will cover most of a wardrobe. Match hardware to your jewelry, so gold-tone buckles, zippers and chain straps rather than gunmetal; mixed metals look accidental on this palette because the two metals sit at different points on the hue axis.
- Eyewear
- Frames in warm tortoiseshell — the amber and honey variety, not the near-black one — plus clear or translucent acetate tinted coral, turquoise or amber, and yellow-gold or rose-gold metal. The frame to walk past is the standard matte black or gunmetal: it is deeper than every color in this palette and it puts the darkest object on your face, permanently. Rimless and half-rim gold metal work well because they add almost no value contrast at all. For sunglasses, choose brown, amber or rose lens tints over gray or blue mirror; gray lenses mute the warm cast of the skin in every photograph taken through them, and on this coloring that warm cast is the point. A tortoise-and-gold combination is the safest single purchase.
Easy to confuse with
- Bright Spring vs True Spring
Both are warm and both are clear, so the hue axis will not separate them. The split is chroma and depth: True Spring's palette is warmer and slightly softer, and it carries golden browns and warm greens that go muddy on Bright Spring. If saturated coral works but camel-brown tailoring also works, you are probably True Spring.

- Bright Spring vs Bright Winter
Identical on the chroma axis — both are the brightest members of their family — and the two palettes share hot fuchsia, emerald and clear turquoise. The difference is hue and floor value: Bright Winter can take pure black and icy white, Bright Spring cannot, and Bright Winter's reds are blue-based where Bright Spring's are coral-based.

Value and chroma are taken over the 12 core colors: mean L* 65.8 (range 54-82), mean C* 63.5 (range 34-80). Hue is taken over the core and neutral groups together — that is where a type's tolerance for the other side of the axis shows up — ignoring swatches below C* 5, which carry no usable hue: 11 fall in the warm arc (CIELAB hue angle 20-140 degrees) and 4 in the cool arc (200-340 degrees), a warm fraction of 0.73. Bands used by this site: value light at mean L* >= 68, medium 45-68, deep < 45; chroma bright at mean C* >= 50, medium 25-50, soft < 25; hue warm at warm fraction >= 0.85, warm-neutral 0.55-0.85, neutral 0.45-0.55, cool-neutral 0.15-0.45, cool < 0.15. These bands are our operational definition, not a published standard. The three labels above are this project's own summary of the type; since the season engine was rewritten to a two-stage model on 2026-08-31 it holds no coordinate table, so there is no engine constant for them to be checked against. What was verified on 2026-08-31: all twelve types are reachable from real answer sets (20,000 deterministic random questionnaires through diagnoseSeason, each type between 3.7% and 15.3%, none unreachable).
- Why the palette is not specified in Pantone. content-spec.md §6 left the color-card standard open; it is settled here on evidence rather than convention.Pantone does not publish sRGB or hex values for Fashion, Home + Interiors (TCX) colors free of charge — the public color finder masks them behind a Pantone Connect subscription. Pantone Color Services Terms and Conditions Ver. 040924, Schedule B, further states that PANTONE Colors, Names, numbers and formulas "may not be copied or published without written permission of Pantone", and that third-party cross-referencing to any PANTONE Color System "is strictly prohibited". CIELAB and sRGB are open published standards with no equivalent restriction.
- The twelve type names used here are the ones currently in use by the two most-read references in this field, so a reader arriving from either will recognize them.
