The one thing to look at
Stand at a mirror in daylight, thirty centimeters away, and look at one iris rather than at your face. You are checking two things that usually travel together: whether there is a definite outer boundary where the iris meets the white, and whether the structure inside the iris is legible enough to describe out loud — spokes, flecks, a ring of a different color around the pupil. On one type the eye is drawn. There is an edge, and the pattern inside has detail you could sketch from memory. On the other, the iris is a warm even color you can name in a single word — warm green, golden hazel, warm blue — but it has no drawn edge; it blends outward into the white over a millimeter or two, and there is nothing inside it to describe. Be straight about the standing of this test: reading iris structure is the most consistent rule of thumb in this field and it is a rule of thumb, repeated by practitioners rather than measured by anyone. Treat a clear result as strong evidence and an ambiguous one as no evidence, rather than staring until it resolves.
Why these two get mixed up
Every quick test in circulation asks about temperature, and both of these are warm, so the instrument most people own returns a positive twice and settles nothing. The second thing people check is depth, and these two sit at the same place on it, so that returns nothing either. What is left is a property with no popular test attached to it at all, and so the question gets decided by vibe: people who feel vivid pick the bright one and people who feel gentle pick the other, which is a description of self-image rather than of coloring. Photographs will not rescue the situation, because a bright type is exactly the coloring a camera handles worst — highly saturated colors sit at or beyond the edge of what an ordinary display and file format can represent, and the ones that fall outside get squashed to the nearest thing that fits, so the trait in question is being flattened by the medium you are inspecting it in.

You are probably Bright Spring if…
A clear turquoise or a clean bright pink works on you even though both lean cooler than your other colors, and that tolerance is the useful signal — it is not that you are cool, it is that you can take a color at full clarity regardless of side. Soft, dusty and heathered fabrics leave you looking tired in a way you have blamed on sleep. Your eye had an edge and a pattern in the mirror test. People describe your coloring with words about intensity rather than words about warmth, and in a group photograph you are easy to find.
You are probably True Spring if…
Coral, warm golden yellow, camel and clear warm green are home, and turquoise puts a faint gray around your mouth that you have noticed without naming. Your best colors are warm at ordinary strength rather than warm at maximum — the neon versions are the ones you tried and returned. Your iris is a color you can name in one word and has no drawn boundary. And cream, ivory and golden neutrals do more for you than optic white or any true black, which is not equally true of the other type.
What throws this reading off
Anything in or near the eye invalidates the tell, and that includes more than people expect: colored or limbal-ring contact lenses are designed to add exactly the edge you are looking for, and even a clear daily lens adds a reflective surface that can read as extra definition. Take them out and wait an hour. Liner, mascara and lash tint all darken the region immediately outside the iris and change how definite its boundary appears. Second, pupil size: in dim light the pupil widens and eats the inner pattern, so do this at a window and not at night. Third, photographs are the wrong medium for this pair in general, since saturated color gets clipped in capture and again in display, and a phone's sharpening will invent iris detail that is not there — use a mirror and your own eyes. Fourth, a tan: it raises the depth and warmth of the skin around the eye and makes any iris look more definite by contrast, so read this in the spring rather than in September. Fifth, both of these types are frequently blonde or light-haired, and a warm gold dye job will answer the temperature question for you in a direction that was never in dispute anyway.
