Bright Winter vs Bright Spring

The one thing to look at
Get two red objects of similar depth: one a blue-leaning cherry or fire-engine red, one a warm tomato or scarlet. Hold them one at a time under the chin in daylight. Then follow the one instruction that makes this work — do not look at your face. Look only at the flat strip of skin immediately below your lower lash line, between the lashes and the top of the cheek. That is where a temperature error shows itself first, because the skin there is thin, has blood close beneath it, and offers nothing to hide behind. With the wrong red, a cast appears in that strip within a second or two: a lavender or gray-violet on one type, a khaki or yellow-gray on the other. With the right red the strip goes clean and the whole under-eye looks less tired than it did a moment before. The reason for two reds rather than a red and a blue is that red at full strength is a color both of these types can carry, so you have taken clarity out of the comparison and left only side, which is the only thing in dispute.
Why these two get mixed up
What is conspicuous about both of these types is the same thing, so it carries no information. Both can wear a color at full volume; both look wrong in dusty, heathered and washed-out fabrics; both get the same one-line summary everywhere on the internet, which is that they can wear bright colors. People therefore identify the trait correctly, feel confirmed, and stop — the trait they have confirmed is the one these two share. What follows is usually a guess made from hair color, which is the least reliable input available since it is the input most likely to have been changed. There is also a category error in the way the material is usually laid out. Presenting these as neighbors on a bright end invites the reading that they are two grades of one thing, when the actual question is which side of a line you are on, and a line has no middle to compromise toward.

You are probably Bright Winter if…
The blue-leaning red left your under-eye clean and the tomato put a yellow-gray in it. Pure white and true black are both usable and you own them. The icy pale colors — a cold pale pink, a cold pale blue — do something at your neck rather than nothing. Silver reads as correct and gold reads as an accessory choice rather than as your metal. And a very cold bright pink, the kind most people find aggressive, is a color you have been complimented in.
You are probably Bright Spring if…
The tomato left the strip clean and the blue-red put a lavender in it. Ivory beats optic white on you, and true black at the neck is heavier than anything else you wear. Warm bright colors — clear coral, a bright warm green, a clean golden yellow — are the ones that make your eyes come forward. Gold is your metal without your having thought about it. And you look better in strong daylight than under artificial light, which is not equally true across the line.
What throws this reading off
Wear no lipstick and no blusher for this. A red already on your mouth is a third red in the experiment and will bias every judgment you make about the two you are holding. Second, match the two reds to each other: if one is a dark burgundy and the other a bright scarlet, you have built a depth test and a clarity test rather than a temperature test, and it will return a confident wrong answer. Two t-shirts, two scarves or two lipstick bullets held against the jaw are all fine, as long as they are equally strong. Third, do this in daylight and never under a warm-white bulb: a 2700 K lamp shifts the entire scene toward the warm red and hands the result to the Spring side in every room in the house. Fourth, do not do it from a photograph. Saturated reds are the colors most likely to be clipped by a camera and a display, and the two will converge on screen. Fifth, wait out a tan or a fresh burn, both of which put their own red into the exact area you are supposed to be reading.
