The one thing to look at

Put on an optic-white shirt — the harsh blue-white kind that looks slightly aggressive on the hanger, not cream, not off-white — and photograph yourself in daylight against a mid-gray or neutral wall, no makeup. Then find the brightest object in the picture and be honest about it. On one type it is a genuine contest: the whites of your eyes and your teeth hold their own beside the shirt, and the image has several bright things in it that are all roughly equal, with the shirt as one of them. On the other, the shirt wins outright and it is not close. It becomes a lit panel under your chin, and everything above it — eyes included — has stepped back to accommodate it. This works where a drape test does not because you are not asking whether white "suits" you, a question nobody can answer about themselves. You are asking a factual question about a photograph, which is whether anything on your face can compete with the brightest thing in the frame.

Which way you lean

You are probably True Winter if…

Pure white is a staple rather than an experiment, and you look better in it than in ivory, which reads as grubby on you. The icy colors — a pale cold pink, a pale cold blue, the ones that look like nothing folded up — come alive at your neck. A true blue-red lipstick is your color, and a brick or a brown-red looks like it belongs to someone else. Charcoal is fine but chocolate brown has never worked. And in the shirt photograph, your eyes and teeth stayed in the running.

You are probably Deep Winter if…

The shirt won the photograph outright, and seeing it stated plainly explains a decade of white shirts you never wore twice. You need something with weight near the face: your best colors have a floor to them — pine, deep burgundy, true black, a very dark plum. The icy pastels read as absent on you rather than as delicate. And unlike the other type, a very dark warm-leaning color — a near-black chocolate, a deep olive — is not a disaster on you and may be one of your better neutrals, which is the single most useful thing to notice about your own wardrobe here.

Why these two get mixed up

"Winter" has a picture attached to it in the popular imagination — dark hair, cold skin, red lipstick — and both of these fit it, so everyone who fits it self-selects and then has to guess between them. The guess is usually made from the strong colors, because those are the ones people own and remember, and strong cold color is the property the two share. The evidence that would settle it lives at the pale end of the palette, in icy pinks and icy blues that look like nothing on a rail, that are hard to find in shops, and that almost nobody has ever deliberately tried against their own face. On top of the perceptual problem there is a naming one: this pair is written as True Winter versus Deep Winter here, as Cool Winter versus Dark Winter elsewhere, and as mixtures of the two in most articles, so a reader who has met both conventions has good reason to think there are four types in play when there are two.

What throws this reading off

Whitened teeth are a genuinely specific problem for this test, because the test uses your teeth as one of the reference bright objects on your face and cosmetic whitening moves that reference by more than the difference under measurement. If your teeth have been professionally whitened in the last year, ignore them and judge on the eyes alone. Second, makeup, and mascara above all: a coat of black mascara manufactures precisely the high-contrast look that makes people call themselves Winter, and it darkens the region around the eye that this reading depends on. Bare face. Third, exposure. If you let a phone meter the shot off a large white shirt it will darken the whole frame to protect the shirt, and your face will lose a step it never had; shoot with the wall and shirt both in frame and check that the shirt is not blown out to a flat patch with no texture. Fourth, automatic white balance: the camera guesses the color of the light from the whole scene and corrects for it, and a big white garment dominates that guess, so shoot against a neutral wall rather than a colored one. Fifth, gray hair, which lightens and cools a head gradually enough that a lifelong Deep Winter can drift into reading as a True Winter without ever noticing a day when it changed.
