The one thing to look at

Buy or borrow two lipsticks: a definite cool rose, the kind that photographs as an actual pink, and a grayed mauve that looks slightly dirty in the tube. Put the rose on one half of your lower lip and the mauve on the other, blot both, and look in daylight from about arm's length — far enough that you stop inspecting your mouth and start seeing your face. One of two things happens. Either the rose half reads as the natural continuation of your mouth and the mauve half looks like a bruise, or the rose half looks stuck on, a color placed over your lips rather than belonging to them, and the mauve half is where your mouth's own color evidently lives. That is the reading. Note that this is deliberately a two-color test: each half shifts the other's apparent saturation, which is what makes the difference visible at all, so judge which half looks like you rather than trying to score each half in isolation.

You are probably True Summer if…

You own a real navy blazer, a proper rose-pink sweater or a definite blue-green scarf, and people compliment you when you wear them rather than complimenting the garment. When you put on a clear color your features look more defined, not less. Photographs of you in flat gray or heather are the ones you delete, because you go slightly blank in them. You have probably been told at some point that you "suit color," and you have never had the experience of a sweater arriving in the post and immediately looking louder on you than it did on the model.

You are probably Soft Summer if…

That experience is your whole history with color. The dusty version of every color is the one you keep, and the clean version gets returned. When you wear something definite, the first thing anyone says is about the garment — "great color" — rather than about you, and you have learned to read that as a warning. Your most-worn clothes are the ones you would struggle to name a color for. And the compliments you actually get come when you are wearing two or three quiet colors at once, at similar depth, in fabrics with a matte surface.

Why these two get mixed up

The word "cool" does almost all of the damage here. Once someone has been told they are cool they shop cool, and since both of these types are cool, nothing they buy ever falls flat in a way that teaches them anything — it just quietly underperforms, and quiet underperformance produces no memory. There is no wardrobe disaster to reason backwards from. Compounding it, virtually everyone meets these palettes as images on a screen, where saturated colors are pushed to the edge of what the display can show and muted ones are lifted to look appealing in a thumbnail; two palettes that are genuinely a long way apart in the cloth look nearly interchangeable in a Pinterest grid. And people conflate the two questions without noticing they are two: "is this color cool" and "is this color quiet" feel like one judgment when you are standing in front of a mirror, but they are independent dimensions and have been treated as independent since Munsell separated them in 1905.

What throws this reading off

Screens are the specific hazard for this pair, more than lighting is. A saturated cool blue often falls outside what an ordinary display can reproduce and gets clipped to the nearest thing it can show, which flattens the very distinction you are trying to make; comparing the two palettes as images will systematically make them look closer together than they are. Judge in cloth. Second, blush and cream products: a mid-saturation blush you have worn for years is already answering this question for you, and it is answering it in the direction of whatever the counter sold you. Do this bare-faced apart from the two lipsticks. Third, a recent tan compresses the reading by adding yellow and depth at once, which pushes both types the same way and does not help. Fourth, and most specific to this pair: if you have already been typed "cool" by an analyst or an app, you will read ambiguous evidence as confirmation of whichever of the two you were told. Run the lip test before you re-read whatever you were told, not after. Fifth, avoid doing this under a mirror with built-in lights, which are almost always high in output and low in fidelity, and exaggerate saturation.
