The one thing to look at

Get a plain brown paper grocery bag, or a piece of unprinted kraft cardboard, and hold it flat against your hair at the root in daylight. Kraft paper is the right instrument here precisely because it is boring: it is a warm mid-brown, it is nearly the same object in every kitchen, and it sits in the middle of the range these two types argue over. Because it is warm, temperature drops out of the comparison — you are not asking whether your hair is warmer than the paper, which would be a hard question, you are asking only whether it is darker, which is an easy one. Hold it so the paper and the hair are in the same light and neither is catching a highlight. On one type your hair sits at the paper or just under it: two things of the same family, and you have to decide which is darker. On the other, your hair is plainly below it and the paper looks pale beside your head, with no deliberation required. Judge the shadowed part of the hair rather than the shine, because the shine is the light, not the hair.

Which way you lean

You are probably True Autumn if…

Your hair met the paper roughly where it lives. What you need from a color is heat rather than weight: pumpkin, moss, deep gold, terracotta and a warm teal at full strength, with the outfit built at mid depth rather than anchored to something dark. A black coat has always looked like it was borrowed. Your eyes are nameable — amber, green, warm hazel — and they have a color rather than a depth. And you look best in the strong low sun of a clear afternoon, which is the light that matches what you are.

You are probably Deep Autumn if…

The paper looked pale next to your head, and that settles it more cleanly than any drape has. Your colors have a floor: mahogany, forest, dark teal, aubergine, a near-black brown. Mid-depth warm colors on their own leave you looking slightly unfinished, and you have learned to add something dark without calling it a rule. Where the other type looks borrowed in a very dark coat, you look like yourself. And the pale warm neutrals — cream, oatmeal, light camel — work on you only when something deep is holding them down.

Why these two get mixed up

Depth is the axis people are worst at on themselves, and the reason is structural rather than careless: you have no external reference. Hue can at least be tested against a gold ring and a silver one, and saturation announces itself when a color starts outshouting a face. Depth has to be compared to something, and the only thing most people compare their coloring to is their own memory of it, which has quietly recalibrated to whatever their coloring currently is. A person whose hair darkened by two levels between twenty and forty will tell you with complete honesty that their hair is "medium brown," because it has been medium brown to them at every moment along the way. Add that both of these types share the same warmth, the same earth palette and, in most wardrobes, the same actual clothes, and the ordinary sources of feedback have nothing to say. The kraft paper is doing one job: giving the comparison a second object that has not been recalibrating alongside you.

What throws this reading off

Hair shine is the first thing to defeat, because hair is glossy and the lit side of a head can read two levels lighter than the same hair in shadow; hold the paper against the part or the underside, not the crown catching a window. Second, lightening. Balayage, highlights and any lift at all move a head up the exact scale this test measures, and unlike a temperature question the effect does not wash out — it grows out. Use root or brow. Third, kraft paper is not a standard: bags vary from pale buff to a definite mid-brown, so if you have two different bags use the plainest one and treat a result that is close either way as close, not as a verdict. Fourth, keep both objects in the same light. Hair by a window with the paper held into the room will hand you an answer made entirely of lighting. Fifth, be careful judging this against black or white instead — a black background will make your hair look lighter and a white one will make it look darker, which is exactly what a hue-matched mid-brown reference is chosen to avoid.
