Soft Autumn vs True Autumn

Warm is not in dispute here, which is unfortunate, because "are you warm?" is the only question most people know how to ask and it returns yes for both. The reading that works is taken from a photograph, and it is taken by deliberately not looking at your face.

The one thing to look at

Put on the most saturated warm thing you own — a real rust, a pumpkin, a marigold, something you would call a color rather than a neutral — and photograph yourself in daylight from the head to the chest, no makeup, nothing else in the frame. Then do the thing nobody does: look at the picture without looking at your face. Ask one question of it. Where is the sharpest, most decisive boundary in this image? On one type it stays where it should be, on you: the line of the jaw, the edge of the hairline, the border of the iris, all of which continue to be the most definite things in the photograph with the garment sitting behind them. On the other, the sharpest boundary has moved to the neckline, and the edge of the cloth is now the most decisive line in the picture while your features have gone slightly soft behind it. Nobody can make this judgment while looking at their own face, which is why the instruction is to look everywhere else. If you are unsure, show the photograph to somebody and ask them what they noticed first.

Why these two get mixed up

People decide their type from the colors that work, and for these two the working sets almost entirely overlap: camel, olive, terracotta, bronze, cream and warm brown are correct on both, so a wardrobe audit returns a tie. The information is in the colors that fail, and nobody keeps a record of those — the sweater that was wrong went back to the shop or to the back of a drawer years ago, unlabeled. On top of that, the one test most people have heard of asks about temperature, and both of these are warm, so the most-run test in the field is guaranteed to return a positive twice and settle nothing. And the failure mode of the muted type is quiet. Nothing looks bad, exactly; the face just recedes half a step, which is invisible from the inside of it and obvious to a photograph taken from three meters away.

Which way you lean

You are probably Soft Autumn if…

Strong color wears you rather than the other way round: the rust sweater in the photograph turned out to be the loudest thing in the frame. Your most-worn clothes are the ones you would struggle to put a name to — a brown that is slightly green, a pink that is mostly gray. Compliments arrive when you are wearing two or three quiet colors at once, and they are compliments about you, not about the outfit. You have bought bright warm things repeatedly, hoping, and worn them once. And a matte or brushed fabric in a given color reliably works better on you than the same color in something with a sheen.

You are probably True Autumn if…

Strong color completes you. In the photograph the rust made your eyes sharper and your jaw more defined, and the garment stayed a garment. In pure neutrals you look faintly underdressed, and you have been told you "suit color" by people who could not say what they meant. Your eye color is nameable in a single word. Deep gold, moss, brick and teal are colors you own several of, and the pale washed-out versions of them — the ones sold as tasteful — read as apologetic on you.

What throws this reading off

Bronzer and a warm-shifted foundation are the specific hazard for this pair, and they do not merely add warmth, which would be harmless here since warmth is agreed. They add saturation to the face, which is the exact quantity under test: a Soft Autumn wearing her usual bronzer has raised her own chroma to meet the sweater and will read as the clearer type. Photograph bare. Second, fabric finish. The same dye on satin and on brushed wool are not the same reading; a sheen separates the surface highlight from the body color and makes the color look more emphatic, so run the test in a matte cloth or run it in both and expect the shiny one to overstate. Third, the light. Ordinary LED lamps vary widely in how much they distort saturation, and a source can make colors look systematically more vivid or more washed out than they are — the lighting industry measures this as a separate number from color accuracy precisely because it is a separate failure. Shoot in daylight. Fourth, screens: if you are comparing the two palettes as images, saturation is being handled by a display and a compression pipeline rather than by your eyes. Fifth, autumn itself. In October, a room full of low warm sun and a wardrobe full of these colors will agree with whatever you already believe.
