The one thing to look at

Put on a genuine mid-to-dark navy — a real navy blazer or a navy crew-neck, not a faded one and not a navy so dark it is really black — with nothing at all at the neck, and stand at a window. Look at the line where the collar meets your jaw, and at the hollow of the throat below it. On one type the navy behaves like a frame: your face stays the brightest and most detailed thing in the picture, and the garment sits behind you doing its job. On the other, the navy turns out to be heavier than anything you own on your own head — heavier than your hair, heavier than your brows — and your face flattens back behind it, so the collar line becomes the strongest edge in the image and your features go soft. Navy is exactly the right garment for this. Almost everybody has one, it is unambiguously cool so it takes temperature out of the comparison entirely, and it sits at the depth these two types actually disagree about, which no pastel and no black can do.

Which way you lean

You are probably Light Summer if…

The navy flattened you, and you have probably owned and abandoned a navy blazer without ever blaming the color. Your best blues are mid and soft — a periwinkle, a powder, a faded denim — and the deep ones read as a weight. Soft white is a color you wear near the face constantly. In a photograph the darkest thing on your head is not much darker than your skin. And you look better in daylight than under lamps, since a light coloring has less of its own to fall back on when the light goes.

You are probably True Summer if…

The navy is a hero garment and always has been: you look more like yourself in it, not less. You can carry a definite rose, a real slate blue and a true burgundy without any of them taking over, where the pastel versions of the same colors leave you looking slightly unfinished. Your hair is clearly a step or two darker than your skin rather than a shade of it. And the compliments you get are about looking put together rather than about looking delicate, which is the difference between having a mid-depth palette and a light one.

Why these two get mixed up

The published advice for these two is nearly word-for-word the same — cool colors, low contrast, soft white instead of optic white, silver rather than gold — so following it produces no failures, and without failures there is nothing to reason from. Both types also describe themselves in the same language: cool, low-contrast, easily overwhelmed. What makes it harder than the equivalent question on the warm side is that lightness is the single easiest trait to manufacture. A half-head of foils, a summer outdoors or a gloss two levels up will put a light reading on a head that is not light, and unlike a color that washes out, this one grows out over a year while the person keeps consulting the mirror. Finally the naming: True Summer is also published as Cool Summer, which readers reasonably hear as the summer that is coolest, and then use temperature to decide a question temperature cannot answer.

What throws this reading off

Highlights are the first hazard, because they fake the exact reading in dispute; judge from the parting and the first centimeter of root, and if you have been lightening for years, get a childhood or pre-color photograph in front of you before you decide. Second, check the navy itself. A great many garments sold as navy are either a faded mid-blue, which makes the test too easy, or a near-black, which makes it impossible; hold it against a black item in daylight and confirm it reads as blue. Third, fitting-room light is the worst light in commercial use for this, being usually dim, usually warm and usually aimed downward, and every judgment you have ever made about navy in a shop should be treated as provisional. Fourth, a tan moves you toward the deeper answer for roughly the length of a season, and the direction of that shift is well documented — skin changes both lightness and yellowness under exposure, and both of those work against a light reading. Fifth, do this before makeup, since foundation applied to match a tanned face is a second tan.
