The one thing to look at
Photograph yourself in flat outdoor shade with no makeup and your hair pushed back off the face, and put a sheet of ordinary white printer paper in the frame beside your cheek before you shoot. The paper matters more than anything else here: it gives the picture a fixed top end, so you are no longer judging lightness against a memory. Then desaturate the photo — any phone editor will do it, but turn off every other adjustment. Both of these types come out low-contrast, so ignore the gaps. Look instead at where the cluster of hair, brow and skin sits between the paper and the darkest thing in the frame. On one, that cluster stays in the upper half of the range and the darkest object in the whole picture is your own pupil. On the other, the cluster is just as tight but has slid down to the middle, and nothing in the frame except the paper reads as light at all. That is the reading, and it is the only one of these tests that survives being done badly.
Why these two get mixed up
Almost every introduction to this subject teaches contrast first, because contrast is the easiest thing to see in a photograph and the easiest thing to explain. Then it sends people off to measure the one property that these two types have in common, and they come back with an answer that distinguishes nothing. Having got nothing from the test they were taught, most people fall back on self-description, and here the vocabulary betrays them: "delicate," "washed out," "I have no color" and "everything overwhelms me" are things both types say about themselves, in the same words, for different underlying reasons. There is also a straightforward evidence problem. Light coloring is the thing most likely to have been altered — highlights, a gloss, a summer spent outdoors — so the head you are looking at in the mirror is frequently not the head the question is about, and people reason from the current version because it is the only one available.
Which way you lean
You are probably Light Summer if…
Pale colors lift you rather than emptying you: a powder blue shirt makes your eyes come forward instead of leaving a gap where your face was. You have a real relationship with white — soft white, not optic — and wear it near your face without thinking about it. Deep colors read as costume on you, and a charcoal coat has always felt like it belonged to somebody older. In the grayscale photo described above, you were surprised how close your hair sat to the paper. And you have been told you look washed out in photographs taken at night, which is the complaint of someone whose coloring depends on light being available.
You are probably Soft Summer if…
Pale colors do not lift you, they evaporate: the same powder blue shirt leaves your face looking unsupported, and you have quietly stopped buying pastels without ever calling it a decision. Mid grays, on the other hand, are so reliable on you that they have taken over the wardrobe. You do not own a white shirt you like. When you look at the grayscale photo, the thing that strikes you is that nothing in it is light — the whole picture sits in a band in the middle, including you. And low, gray, overcast light is the light you look best in, which is not true of the other type.
What throws this reading off
Highlights are the specific hazard here, because they fake the exact reading this page is trying to take. Balayage, a half-head of foils or a summer of sun puts a light band across the top of a head that sits a level or two lower, and in a desaturated photo that band is indistinguishable from naturally light hair. Shoot with a parting visible and judge from the first centimeter of root, not from the lengths. Second, your camera fights you: phones brighten faces automatically, and if the face is the only thing in the frame the exposure will be set to make it look normal regardless of how light it actually is. The white paper is what defeats this — expose so the paper is not blown out and everything else falls into place. Third, do not do this in a bathroom or under a vanity light; the standard for judging color asks for a bright, high-fidelity light source and an even field, and a domestic mirror light meets neither. Fourth, a tan moves you down the scale for about three months, so if you are reading this in late summer, either wait or use an area of skin that has not been exposed. Fifth, self-tanner does the same thing and is worse, because it adds yellow as well as depth.
