The one thing to look at

Take an ordinary brown brow pencil or powder — the plain mid-brown that is the default shade in every range — and fill in half of one eyebrow in daylight with nothing else on your face. Then step back and look at the two halves together. On one type the filled half looks like a slightly tidier version of the brow you already had, and a stranger would not spot the join. On the other it looks drawn on: a distinct object sitting on the face, and your eye goes to it before it goes to your eyes. The brow is the right place for this because it is one of the few standardized references available to an ordinary person — the default brown is close to the same product everywhere — and because brows and lashes carry the head's own depth without being colored the way scalp hair usually is. If you have always found that brow products look heavy on you and have been buying progressively lighter ones for years, you have already run this experiment without recording the result.

You are probably Light Spring if…

The pencil looked drawn on, and now that you think about it every brow product you have ever owned did. Your lashes are light at the tips and disappear without mascara. You need each thing a step lighter than the version that is sold as default: lighter foundation than your face seems to call for, softer liner, a paler version of every color. Deep colors read as costume rather than as authority, and a charcoal coat wears you. And you have been described as fair by people who then noticed you tan.

You are probably True Spring if…

The pencil looked like your brow. You can carry a color at full ordinary depth — a real tomato-red, a proper golden brown, a warm teal — without it taking over, and the pastel versions of those colors are the ones that leave you looking undressed. Your brows and lashes are dark enough to define your eyes without help. In photographs the darkest thing on your head is clearly darker than your skin rather than a shade of it. And medium-depth warm neutrals — camel, tobacco, bronze — are the ones you reach for over the pale ones.

Why these two get mixed up

These two get the same shopping advice, own the same coral and camel, and produce the same compliments, so the ordinary feedback loop returns a tie. The dispute is about depth, and depth is the property that light coloring is worst at reporting about itself, for two reasons that compound. The first is that light hair is the most dyed hair there is, and every routine lightening service moves a head up exactly the scale in question. The second is memory: a great many adults who read as light were considerably lighter as children, and the self-image formed then does not update on its own, so people describe hair they had at nine and believe they are describing hair they have now. Between those two, the number of people asking this question while looking at evidence they themselves produced is very high, and none of them are being careless — the altered version is simply the only version available to look at.

What throws this reading off

Brow tinting and microblading defeat this test completely, and both are common enough that they need naming first: a tinted brow is somebody else's depth applied to your face, and a pigmented one is permanent. If either applies, use lash color at the root, or the finest hair at your temple, and accept a weaker reading. Second, use a plain mid-brown pencil, not a taupe, not an ash, not a dark brown — the point of the test is that the reference is ordinary, and a fashionable cool-toned brow shade will fail on temperature and be misread as failing on depth. Third, childhood photographs are admissible evidence about a child and not about you; if you use one, use it knowing that. Fourth, do this at a window: judging a small difference in depth in a dim room is unreliable, and critical color comparison is normally done at illuminance levels far above domestic lighting. Fifth, a summer tan raises the skin toward the brow and closes the gap the test measures, so a September reading will bias toward the deeper answer.
