Two light, delicate types that get identical advice from almost every article written about either of them, and that shop from the same pastel rail. The reading that separates them is not taken from a drape at all. It is taken from what your skin does over a summer.

The one thing to look at

Look at what your burn turns into. Both of these types burn, so "do you burn?" answers nothing and everybody asks it first anyway. The useful question is what is left two weeks later. At the end of a summer, in daylight, put the skin of your inner upper arm — which has been covered all season — directly against the back of the same forearm, which has not, so the two are touching. On one type the exposed skin has picked up a light golden or honey cast: not necessarily much darker, but visibly warmer than the covered skin. On the other, the exposed skin has gone slightly deeper or slightly pinker without ever going gold, and the difference between the two patches is a difference of depth alone. If it is February, use the same trick on whatever exposure you did get: the V of the neck against the skin under the bra strap, or the top of the foot against the arch. What you are reading is not how easily you tan but which direction your skin travels when it does, which is a stable property and one of the few in this whole subject that is measured rather than opined.

Which way you lean

You are probably Light Spring if…

Peach, coral, warm apricot and a clear light golden yellow are colors you look well in and have probably been told so. Ivory and cream beat white on you every time; the optic-white shirt makes you look slightly gray. Your eyes have a warm ring or warm flecks in them at close range, even if the overall color is blue or green. You look your best in early morning and late afternoon light and in candlelight, and you photograph badly under fluorescent tubes. And in the arm test above, something golden showed up.

You are probably Light Summer if…

Rose, soft lavender, periwinkle and a clear light blue are your colors, and peach is the one that has always looked slightly wrong on you without your being able to say why. Soft white beats ivory; anything cream-colored reads as dingy next to your skin. Your eyes are cool at close range — gray-blue, blue-gray, a cool green — with no warm ring. You look better on overcast days than in strong sun, which is the opposite of what you were told to expect from a "light" type. And in the arm test, the exposed skin was deeper or pinker but never gold.

Why these two get mixed up

These two receive the same advice everywhere, and it is nearly all true of both: wear light colors, avoid black, keep contrast low, do not let anything overwhelm you. The advice being correct is exactly the problem — following it produces no failures, and failures are where the information is. The shops make it worse, because a spring pastel rail and a summer pastel rail are largely the same six colors at slightly different temperatures, and nobody looking at a rack of pale blue sweaters can tell which of them is which. Then there is the vocabulary. "Delicate," "fair," "washed out" and "I have no color of my own" are self-descriptions both types give, in the same words. And light coloring is the coloring most likely to have been altered: blonde dye is warm by default, and a person who has been highlighting for a decade is looking at evidence they created.

What throws this reading off

Hair color is the biggest single distortion in this pair, because light types dye more often than anyone and blonde formulations run warm as a matter of chemistry rather than choice. A cool-toned light-brown or blonde who has been going golden for years will read Spring on every visual test and Summer on the arm test, and the arm is the one to believe. Second, self-tanner does the same thing deliberately: it deposits a yellow-brown that has nothing to do with your own pigment, and it takes a fortnight to leave. Do the arm test on skin that has never seen a bottle. Third, freckles. Freckles do not settle temperature — what they do is scatter mid-depth spots across a light face, which makes skin read deeper and warmer in a photograph than it measures in person, so do not judge a freckled forearm from a picture. Fourth, timing: run this at the end of the summer, not in March, when neither patch has anything to say. Fifth, warm-white bulbs. On light coloring, which has little pigment to resist them, a 2700 K lamp adds more apparent warmth than it does on anyone else, and it will hand you the Spring answer in any room in your house.
