The one thing to look at

Measure your shoulders and divide by your height. Stand with your back against a wall, feet flat, shoulders relaxed and not squared, and have someone press a book flat against each shoulder so its spine meets the bony point at the top of the arm - the corner you can feel, not the soft outer swell of the muscle - and mark the wall at each spine. Measure between the marks, then divide by your standing height and multiply by a hundred. Across 1,986 women in the ANSUR II public release, that percentage is 20.8 at the 5th percentile, 21.9 at the 25th, 22.5 at the median, 23.1 at the 75th and 24.0 at the 95th. A reading up at the top of that range is the wide, large-scale reading; one at or below the middle is the moderate one. We chose where to put the line, and that part is a convention rather than a finding - but the number itself is not a matter of opinion, and it is the only thing on this page that is not.

Why these two get mixed up

Because there is no qualitative difference to notice. Every other comparison on this site turns on a yes-or-no observation somewhere; this one asks only how much, and people are unreliable at absolute magnitude without a reference object. You see yourself front-on, alone, at the same distance, in the same mirror, every day - an image with no scale in it. Worse, the test people usually reach for cannot settle it either. "Oversized clothing looks deliberate on me rather than borrowed" asks you to judge an intention, with no fixed reference, in a mirror you already hold opinions about - and whether any given garment counts as oversized in the first place depends on how it was cut, which is not a property of you and cannot be held constant between two shops. A tape measure has none of those problems, which is the whole reason this page hands you one instead of a wardrobe question. And there is a naming problem pushing in one direction: the unmodified name reads as the plain, unmarked default, and practitioners now widely repeat that it was retired in the author's later revision and that anyone landing there should route to a modified version instead. We could not find a first-party source for that claim. It is still moving people toward the larger-scale answer for reasons that have nothing to do with their shoulders.

Which way you lean

You are probably Flamboyant Natural if…

Your percentage lands at the top of the range, and everything downstream of that follows. A garment bought to fit your bust binds across the upper back and restricts you when you reach forward; a jacket in your usual size puts its shoulder seam inboard of your own bone point and the sleeve head strains over it. You buy tops and coats for the shoulders and have everything below taken in, and you are used to being told a size is not available in your fit rather than in your size. Clothing that is genuinely oversized on you - a real size or two above what fits your bust, rather than something merely cut loose - reads as intentional rather than as a mistake.

You are probably Natural if…

Your percentage lands at or near the middle. One size fits your shoulder and your body at the same time, and when a jacket in your usual size is done up, the shoulder seam finishes at your own bone point rather than short of it. Standard sizing works on you in the ordinary way, which is to say it is imperfect in ordinary ways rather than failing at one specific joint. Clothing cut deliberately large reads as borrowed on you rather than as a choice, and the fix that improves an outfit is almost always a softer structure rather than a bigger one.

What throws this reading off

The single biggest error on this pair is measuring the wrong shoulder. The frame is the bone point to bone point width; what you see in a mirror is that plus the deltoid and whatever sits over it, and those are separate measurements for a reason. In the ANSUR II female records the across-the- deltoid width exceeds the bone-to-bone width by 4.9 cm at the 5th percentile, 8.3 cm at the median and 12.6 cm at the 95th, so muscle and soft tissue add somewhere between a finger's width and a hand's width to your apparent shoulder - and that part changes with training and with weight while the bone does not. Press to the bone. Second, posture: people with forward-head and rounded- shoulder posture have measurably protracted and anteriorly tilted shoulder blades, which pulls the bone points forward and narrows the width you record, so stand as you stand when nobody is watching rather than as you stand when someone is measuring you. Third, height: this test already divides by your height, which is the whole reason it works - do not then re-apply the assumption that tall means large-framed, because the two are only loosely related. Fourth, your wardrobe: if every top you own is cut oversized, you have no observation to make.

We computed the figures ourselves on 2026-08-31 from the 1,986 female records, dividing biacromial breadth by stature: 20.82 percent at the 5th percentile, 21.86 at the 25th, 22.45 at the median, 23.06 at the 75th and 24.00 at the 95th. This is a serving military sample and not a general population sample, so it is a reference spread rather than a norm, and it is likely to be leaner and more physically selected than the population at large.

The inference that this changes a home shoulder-width measurement is ours, not the paper's.

The claim that the unmodified type was withdrawn is widely repeated by practitioners and we could not source it.theconceptwardrobe's index of the thirteen types, read on 2026-08-31, lists the unmodified Natural as a current type and says nothing about any type being withdrawn. David Kibbe's Power of Style (Rodale Books, 7 January 2025, ISBN 978-0-593-58114-8) is described by its publisher as containing overhauls and updates of the image identity system but names no count of types and no withdrawals. We found no publicly citable first-party statement retiring any type as of 2026-08-31.
