Deep Winter vs Deep Autumn

The one thing to look at

Take a piece of genuinely black fabric — a black t-shirt washed once, not a faded one — to a window in the middle of the day. Part your hair to expose two centimeters of unwashed root at the crown, and lay the black cloth directly against it so the two are touching with no gap. Then look at the hair, not the cloth. One of two things happens within a couple of seconds. Either the hair reads as a slightly softer, browner version of the same thing the cloth is, with nothing new appearing in it, or a red, bronze or wine cast rises out of the hair that you have never noticed in a mirror. That cast was always there; it is invisible on its own because a dark color carries very little visible saturation, and it becomes visible only when something is placed beside it to push it. This is why black cloth is the right instrument: it is the reference that makes a small amount of warmth in a dark head legible, and no amount of staring at your hair unaided will do the same job.

Which way you lean

You are probably Deep Winter if…

Black is genuinely easy on you and always has been — not merely acceptable, but the thing you reach for when you want to look like yourself. Dark chocolate brown, on the other hand, has never quite worked and you have probably blamed the cut rather than the color. Icy pale colors, the ones that look like nothing on a hanger, do something for you at the neck. Your eyes have a definite edge to them at conversation distance. And when the black cloth went against your roots, nothing new came up out of the hair.

You are probably Deep Autumn if…

Something came up out of the hair, and having seen it you cannot unsee it. Dark chocolate, forest green, mahogany and a deep olive are the colors that make you look expensive, and you own more of them than you realized. Black is the color you wear for other people's occasions; in photographs it sits on you like a hole cut out of the picture, with your face floating above it. You look better in autumn light than in winter light. And the cream, camel or bronze things in your wardrobe get worn even though the internet told you that deep types should not own them.

Why these two get mixed up

Dark hair has a reputation, and the reputation says Winter. Anyone with near-black hair and skin that is not obviously golden has been told they are a Winter at some point by somebody, and once that has happened the wardrobe follows and stops producing counter-evidence, since deep colors of either temperature are the ones both types were going to buy anyway. Underneath the reputation there is a real perceptual problem: hue is the hardest thing to read at low value. A color's visible saturation shrinks as it gets darker, so the warmth in a very dark brown head of hair genuinely is faint, and asking someone to see it unaided is asking them to do something the eye is bad at. People then substitute the question they can answer — "is my hair dark?" — for the one they cannot, and both types answer yes. The two names make it worse rather than better: half the field writes Dark Winter and Dark Autumn, half writes Deep, and readers who have met both sets assume they are looking at four types rather than two.

What throws this reading off

Dyed hair ruins this reading more thoroughly here than in any other comparison on the site, because black and near-black are the most commonly bought shades and they overwrite exactly the evidence the test needs. Use root growth only — a centimeter is enough — and if you have none, use the hair at the nape underneath, which is often the least processed. Second, a "cool" or "ash" result is at its strongest the week it is applied and weakest by the time the next appointment is due, so the same head can return one answer soon after a salon visit and another shortly before the next one. Note where you are in that cycle before believing either. Third, do not do this in a dim room. Judging hue needs a great deal of light — the professional standard for critical color comparison asks for around 2000 lux, roughly what you get beside a window at midday and many times what a lamp-lit living room provides — and in low light a faint warm cast simply is not available to be seen. Fourth, avoid warm-white domestic bulbs, which manufacture the exact evidence in dispute. Fifth, do this before makeup: bronzer and a warm-shifted base will bias the face even though the test is about the hair, because you will inevitably glance down.
