The one thing to look at

Find a lock of hair at the root — the first centimeter out of the scalp, not the lengths — and hold it flat against the inside of your own forearm in daylight, touching, no gap. You are comparing two things that belong to the same person, which removes the usual problem of not having a reference. On one type the answer arrives instantly and is not close: the hair is several unmistakable steps darker than any skin you own, and the boundary between them is the most definite line on your body. On the other, the two turn out to be surprisingly near each other, and you have to look for the edge — the hair is darker, but only in the way a shadow is darker, and no one would call it a contrast. Then repeat it with the outer third of an eyebrow, which is usually the least-processed hair on a head. Two agreeing readings from hair that has not been dyed is as much certainty as this comparison offers.

You are probably Deep Autumn if…

You need a dark anchor in an outfit or it does not read as finished — camel and cream on their own leave you looking unfinished rather than soft. Dark chocolate, forest green, aubergine and a deep brick are the colors people compliment. In old photographs your hair reads as genuinely dark against your face rather than as a warm mid-brown. You have always been able to wear a dark coat and look better in it, not smaller. And in the forearm test, the gap was not a close call.

You are probably Soft Autumn if…

Dark colors sit heavily on you: a chocolate-brown coat reads as a weight rather than an anchor, and you tend to unbutton it or add a lighter scarf without thinking about why. Your best clothes live in the middle of the range and stay there — camel with sage, taupe with terracotta. Nobody has ever described your hair as dark. And in the forearm test you found yourself squinting to locate the boundary, which is itself the answer.

Why these two get mixed up

Hair color is the culprit, and it is nearly universal in the group of people asking this question. Warm mid-brown is the most-bought shade there is; a naturally deep head that has been lifted two levels and a naturally mid head that has been darkened for coverage arrive at exactly the same place, and the person in the mirror has no way of knowing which of those two histories produced it. Gray does the same thing from the other direction and does it slowly, which makes it worse: graying is gradual and rarely complete, so a person can spend a decade at some partial mixture that reads lighter and quieter than the head they had at thirty, without there ever being a moment when the change was noticeable. Meanwhile the two types dress from an overlapping palette of earth colors, so the wardrobe cannot arbitrate either. The one thing left that has not been altered is the relationship between your hair and your own skin, which is why the test above compares them to each other rather than to a swatch.

What throws this reading off

Dye is the first, second and third hazard here, because this is the one comparison where the axis in dispute is the exact thing a colorist changes on purpose. Nothing on the lengths is admissible evidence; use root growth or the eyebrow, and if you have neither, use a childhood photograph taken outdoors and accept that it settles the question for the child rather than the adult. Second, gray. A head that is a third gray reads a full band lighter and quieter than the same head did before, and the change is real rather than an artifact — but it changes which advice serves you, not which type you were born, so decide which of those two questions you are actually asking. Third, the room: hold the test up against a mid-gray or white background, because a dark wall behind your arm will close the gap you are trying to measure and a white one will exaggerate it. Fourth, sunlight falling on the hair but not the arm, or the reverse, will invent a difference of two levels out of nothing; keep both in the same light. Fifth, a tan raises the arm toward the hair and can turn a clear gap into a marginal one, so use skin that stays covered.
