The one thing to look at

Find two greens of the same strength: one yellow-green — grass, apple, lime — and one blue-green — pine, emerald, deep teal. Both must be clear rather than dusty and roughly equal in depth, so that the only difference between them is which way the green leans. Hold each under the chin in turn and watch the skin along the jaw and beside the nose, not the color. On one type the yellow-green stays alive: the face holds up and the green reads as a green. On the other, it goes sallow within a second or two, a definite yellow-gray settling along the jaw, and the blue-green is where the face comes back. Green is the right family for this test because green is where the yellow-to-blue direction is most legible at a single depth — you cannot run the same comparison with two reds or two blues without changing how strong they are at the same time, and then you are testing two things at once and will believe whichever answer arrives first.

You are probably Bright Winter if…

The yellow-green survived, and having watched your jaw not go gray you can stop wondering. You can wear a color that leans a little warm as long as it is clean — a clear bright turquoise, a strong warm-leaning red — and it is cleanliness rather than temperature that governs what works on you. The icy pastels and the near-neon brights both work, which is an unusual combination and the most distinguishing thing about your palette. Dusty and heathered fabrics are the reliable failures.

You are probably True Winter if…

The yellow-green put a yellow-gray along your jaw and the blue-green fixed it. Everything that works on you is blue-based without exception, and the exceptions you have tried have not worked. A true blue-red is your red; a brick or coral red looks like it belongs to somebody else. Pure white and true black are both correct. Your palette is narrower than the other type's but more decisive, and you have probably found that once you know a color is right you can buy it in any fabric and it stays right.

Why these two get mixed up

People decide their type from the colors that work on them, and for these two the working sets overlap almost exactly: strong cold color, true black, definite white, a blue-red lipstick. So the evidence anyone actually possesses returns a tie, and the evidence that would break the tie lives in the colors that fail, which nobody owns and nobody remembers failing because they were never bought. There is a labeling problem on top of that. Bright Winter is frequently introduced as the winter that sits closest to spring, and readers hear that as "slightly warm," which is not what it means and sends people looking for warmth they will not find. And the alternate names collide awkwardly: Clear Winter and Cool Winter start with the same letter, are used by different schools for different types, and get swapped by readers who have met one convention and then the other.

What throws this reading off

Lighting sabotages this particular test more than any other on the site, and for a specific technical reason: ordinary white LEDs are built from a blue emitter and a phosphor, and that construction leaves a well-documented dip in the spectrum between roughly 480 and 520 nanometers — the cyan gap — which is precisely the region separating your two greens. Under a cheap LED, the two swatches genuinely do move toward each other, and no amount of care in looking will recover the difference. Do this at a window and only at a window. Second, this is why a lamp being described as accurate is not enough: a source can be faithful on average and systematically wrong in one region of hue, which is why the lighting industry now reports fidelity and saturation shift per hue bin rather than as one number. Third, no makeup: foundation and bronzer both add yellow to the jaw, which is the exact area you are reading. Fourth, match the two greens for depth, or you will be running a value test and calling it a hue test. Fifth, a tan adds yellow to the whole field and will let the yellow-green pass on someone it would otherwise fail.
